G.W. Khamkar Spices: A Legacy of Flavor, From Lalbaug to the World

For decades, G.W. Khamkar Spices has been the heart of Maharashtrian culinary tradition, cherished by food enthusiasts not just in Lalbaug, but globally. Our story is one of unwavering dedication, family legacy, and a passion for authentic flavors that spans generations.

The Khamkar journey began in Aargaon, Ratnagiri, with ancestors who dared to bring their culinary heritage to Mumbai. In 1918, Tanu Bhikaji Khamkar established a spice business in Tardeo, laying the foundation for what would become a beloved institution. His invitation to his four brothers – Bhau, Raghunath, Pundalik, and Vaman Bhikaji Khamkar – fueled the company's expansion, reaching prominent Mumbai neighborhoods.

  • Vaman Khamkar’s son, Gopichand, inherited not only the business but also a profound love for cooking. Recognizing his passion, Vaman entrusted him with the family legacy. Gopichand transformed the business, focusing on providing essential spices to the Lalbaug, Parel, Byculla, and Mazgaon regions. He innovated by introducing traditional, homemade, ready-made spice blends, simplifying Maharashtrian cooking while preserving its authentic taste. This vision culminated in the founding of G.W. Khamkar Spices Company in 1994.
  • Gopichand’s dedication was driven by a desire to share the vibrant flavors of Maharashtra with the world, experimenting tirelessly to perfect his blends. His untimely passing in 2004 left a void, but his legacy was carried on by his sons, Sanket and Sanjog.
  • At just 20, Sanket stepped up, ensuring the business thrived while Sanjog completed his studies. Sanket’s strategic vision and relentless work ethic streamlined production, reducing processing time from days to a single day. The brothers expanded distribution, introduced home delivery, and grew the company from a small operation to one employing over 40 people. Their efforts have resulted in a remarkable 150-fold increase in turnover over 15 years.
  • The enduring bond between G.W. Khamkar Spices and its customers is a testament to the family's commitment to quality. Upholding Gopichand’s vision, Sanket and Sanjog maintain traditional cold-pressing methods for spices like coriander, turmeric, and chili, ensuring unparalleled freshness and flavor. This dedication has garnered demand not only in Mumbai but across India.
  • Looking ahead, G.W. Khamkar Spices aims to introduce its authentic flavors to a global audience, promoting the richness of Indian cuisine. The company also envisions a franchise model, creating opportunities for the nation’s youth.
  • For 86 years, three generations of the Khamkar family have served their customers with unwavering sincerity. As they approach their centennial, they are confident that the next generation will continue this tradition, carrying the legacy of G.W. Khamkar Spices forward.
